Out of all the books Dennis McKiernan has written, this is basically the only book that is a real standalone with no connections to anybody or anything else… except, you know, copying the stuff from his own books that he copied from other authors. For realsies. Not kidding. He totally cannibalized his own fantasy books, which are very derivative coughtolkiencough and wrote other books based on what he wrote.
It’s also a sci-fi novel. It’s got epic fantasy stuff in it, but it’s actually all a VR experience gone horribly, horribly wrong. So there’s fantasy, but none of it is real… except it’s still deadly. Yes, it’s another one of THOSE VR stories that they had a lot of in the 80s and 90s.
