Once Upon A Winter’s Night

Dennis McKiernan really likes fairy tale trappings, especially if they come with lots of instant true love, adventures, disgusting baddies and stuff like that. So it doesn’t come as a big surprise that he eventually wrote a of high fantasy series loosely based on classic fairy tales, starting with one based on the Norwegian folktale “East of the Sun and West of the Moon.” The original story is kind of like Beauty and the Beast but with a dash of Eros and Psyche, plus trolls.

And HOT DAMN does this book make my teeth curl.

Its heroine is a Purity Sue in love with Mr. Perfect, and she sets out on a surprisingly dull adventure across the land of Faery… which really isn’t that different from the real world. The only difference is magic and elves.
