The Halfling House

If you’re wondering, this is not technically a Mithgar story. It has some creatures from that series, but is otherwise a standalone story.

What is it about? Well, this story was part of an anthology called After the King.

It was a collection of fantasy stories that were supposed to pay homage to J.R.R. Tolkien, by authors like Poul Anderson, Andre Norton, Patricia McKillip, Emma Bull, Robert Silverberg, Charles de Lint, Jane Yolen, and other classic authors. And the worst one… is by our friend Dennis McKiernan.

It’s actually not so much a homage to Tolkien as a homage to McKiernan’s own creations (like Fox Riders) and various mythological creatures that he likes. In fact, he takes a literary crap on Tolkien’s hobbits at the beginning of the story. Not a funny little poke, but a crap.
